"Bolo" refers to cooked sweet in Portuguese. They were introduced to Japan with the arrival of foreign ships in the Edo period. At the time they were a thin and hard sweets but were enhanced in Shiga Prefecture, developing into the “Maru Bolo,” with a plump and round shape.
